Coronavirus Has Me Sweating Out My Sports Addiction

‘For in truth,” Balzac writes in his novel “Cousin Pons,” “to adopt a mania is like applying a poultice to one’s soul; it can cure any taedium vitae, any spleen.” No dope, Balzac, at least judging by my own mania for watching sports on television. Watching sports has, if not cured, at least relieved the tedium of everyday life for me. Having a game to look forward to lifts the spirits. Watching the game takes one’s mind off the glitches, irritations and setbacks that life supplies, even among the most fortunate of us, with relentless regularity.
