As the new coronavirus spread globally and nations shut borders over the recent weeks, Zalmay Khalilzad kept hopping on flights to cement a peace deal in Afghanistan.

The U.S. special envoy, a veteran diplomat who has spent 18 months negotiating with all sides on a recently announced deal to end the American military role in Afghanistan next year, had to shift gears and turned to Skype in his efforts to bring America’s longest war to an end.
