I Miss Baseball, the ‘Modest Little Game’

Thursday should have been Major League Baseball’s opening day. The season has been delayed because of the new coronavirus. In October 1989 a major earthquake in the Bay Area caused the San Francisco-Oakland World Series to be delayed. I was baseball commissioner, and I said that baseball is a “modest little game that knows its place,” meaning we would stand down until our games posed no threat to public safety.

Perhaps we need to be reminded from time to time that some things are more important than the NCAA basketball tournament,…
