Global Coronavirus Death Toll Passes 79,000 as Lockdowns Tighten

U.S. deaths from the new coronavirus continued a precipitous climb, as New York and New Jersey reported their highest daily tolls despite signs that the outbreaks in the two hardest-hit states were starting to slow.

European countries with falling infection rates began easing their restrictions, while some Asian leaders called for extended lockdowns to fight the pandemic. U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson remained in intensive care, suffering from severe symptoms of the virus.
